Making your own chalkboard is super easy and cheap to make. The best part is that this chalkboard is so skinny that it is easy to store away even in the smallest closet. Since I have two boys, I decided to make each of them their own chalkboard to play with. Well, to be honest I actually didn’t make these chalkboards – my year old son made it. Yes it’s that simple! This is a great activity to do with your kids from toddlers to preschoolers all the way up to high school. Try it for yourself….

Thing You Need:

  • A large, thin piece of wood
  • Chalkboard Paint
  • Paint brush

Note for My Singapore Readers: I purchased all of my supplies from Art Friend at Takashimaya. The piece of wood was only SG$3.80. The big can of chalkboard paint is SG$29 – but this is really a never-ending can of paint (they do sell a smaller can for SG$12). I have already used to to paint our Halloween Jack-O-Lantern, our Easter Eggs, and now these two chalkboards and it is still more than half full!!!

Step by Step:

Step 1: Wipe the board clean

Step 2: Apply the 1st layer of chalkboard paint. Let it dry overnight.

Step 3: Apply the 2nd layer of chalkboard paint. Let it dry for at least 24 hours.

Step 4: Rub chalk all over your new chalkboard. This helps the chalkboard surface last longer.

Step 5: Bring out the chalk and let the FUN begin!!

Step 6: When you are finished, wipe it clean and start drawing all over again.
