If you are already planning on throwing a Halloween bash, try making this Jack-O-Lantern Piñata. Little kids just love pinatas, not to mention the Jack-O-Lantern piñata makes and awesome party centerpiece as well.
I made this piñata last year for my then 2-year-old son and his little friends Halloween party (check out the party highlights here).
First you will need to make the paper-mâché piñata. Click here for my easy step by step guide on how to make the piñata and how to make the paper-mâché glue.
Super Note: Kid’s get enough candy at Halloween, so I decided to stuff the pinata with mini-bags of Halloween toys (a plastic eyeball, tatoo, scary eye-patch, bat & spider rings, etc). It is up to you what you decide to put inside. This piñata is huge – not like the store bought ones – hence you can be creative and fit lots of fun things inside.
Once you have made and stuffed your paper-mache piñata, you will need to decorate the piñata to make it look like a Jack-O-Lantern.
Things you need:
- orange, black and green crepe paper
- black construction paper (for the face)
- newspaper (for the stem)
- masking tape
- scissors
- glue
Decorating Step-by-Step
Step 1: Cover the entire paper-mache pinata with orange crepe paper. (This will take at least 1 hour or more. It depends on the size of your pinata).
Step 2: Roll up a big piece of newspaper to make the pumpkin stem. Attach the stem using masking tape.
Step 3: Cut out the Jack-O-Lantern’s facial features on black paper. Note: Do a mock up with newspaper first so that you can decide what looks the best.
Step 4: Cover the stem with green crepe paper.
Step 5: Cover the black cut-outs with crepe paper, using a flower technique.
Step 6: Tape the eyes, nose and mouth onto the pinata.
And now you are finally finished! Give yourself a pat on the back. Look at the size of this Jack-O-Lantern! It is bigger than my then 2 year old son.
I am sure your Jack-O-Lantern pinata will be a massive hit at your Halloween party!
It also makes an awesome Halloween party centerpiece!
If you don’t want to make a Jack-O-Lantern, try making a Halloween monster or skull pinata instead.
Good luck party planning! Hope you have a Happy Halloween!!
